Summer can be a great time to get started. Deadlines vary school to school, but some schools begin accepting applications as early as the fall of the year prior to when your child would begin. 

Start by researching what options are available to you and your family. They can also help you prepare for school visits to find out more and narrow your options.

Once you have narrowed your search to your top schools, it’s time to start preparing your application and enrollment materials. These requirements can vary significantly from school to school. 

Some schools have specific admissions requirements and will only accept certain students who meet those criteria. For example, some schools – like magnet and choice schools – will require an application, interview, and/or test results to be considered for selective admission. Other schools may use a lottery and randomly accept applicants from a pool. Other schools – like neighborhood schools – may accept any student that lives in their geographical boundaries and provides the necessary documentation. Did you miss a deadline? You may have more options than you think. Here’s a pro tip: Schools don’t always fill all their slots with the applications they receive by their first deadline.  It never hurts to call and ask your top schools if slots still remain even if their deadlines have passed.
